Kagbhusandi Lake Trek

Kagbhusandi Lake is one of the least-visited high-altitude lakes in the Garhwal Himalayas, tucked below Hathi Parvat inside the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. We take the same trail that branches off toward the Valley of Flowers at Bhyundar village, then peel away into a far quieter route — through dense forest, open bugyals, and finally the boulder-strewn approach to Kankul Pass before dropping to the lake itself. This is not a trek for a first Himalayan outing; we ask that every trekker joining us come with prior high-altitude experience and a solid fitness base.

Tucked away in Chamoli district, the Kagbhusandi Trek leads to one of Uttarakhand's true hidden gems — a high-altitude lake resting at 4,800 meters that most trekkers in the Himalayas have never even heard of. We like that about it. While the bigger-name trails get crowded every season, Kagbhusandi Lake stays quiet, undisturbed, and every bit as spectacular.

Kagbhusandi Lake: Where Myth Meets the Mountains

The lake carries real weight in Hindu mythology. It's said to be home to Kagbhusandi, the wise crow from the Ramayana who is believed to still reside here, narrating the story of Lord Rama's life to anyone patient enough to listen. Walking in, that sense of stillness and old story makes more sense than any map ever could — this isn't just a scenic stop, it's a place people have treated as sacred for a very long time.

Getting there means walking through everything a Himalayan trek should offer. The trail moves through dense oak, rhododendron, and birch forest before opening into wide alpine meadows and high mountain passes — the kind of terrain that keeps changing character every few kilometers, so you're never walking the same forest twice.

And then there's the reward at the top. From near the lake, the horizon fills with some of the biggest names in the Garhwal Himalaya — Nanda Devi, Hathi Parvat, Ghori Parvat, and Chaukhamba all standing in view at once.
