About Char Dham Yatra

About Char Dham Yatra 2026

Each year between May and October, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims make their way through the Garhwal Himalayas to visit four temples that have held the imagination of Hindus for over twelve centuries. The Char Dham Yatra — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is not a tourist circuit. It is a journey people plan for years, sometimes decades.

The four dhams and what they represent

Yamunotri is where the river Yamuna originates. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna (daughter of the Sun God), sits at 3,293 metres and requires a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti. The hot spring here — Surya Kund — where pilgrims cook rice as prasad is unlike anything else in the circuit.

Gangotri marks the spot where King Bhagirath meditated to bring the Ganga to earth. At 3,100 metres, it is the most accessible of the four dhams with a well-maintained road. The actual source of the Ganga, Gaumukh glacier, is a 19 km further trek for those who want to go there.

Kedarnath is the most physically demanding and the most emotionally resonant for most pilgrims. One of Lord Shiva's 12 Jyotirlingas, it sits at 3,583 metres at the head of the Mandakini river. The 20 km trek from Gaurikund is the centrepiece of the entire yatra. The temple survived the catastrophic 2013 floods — a fact that deepens its significance for many pilgrims.

Badrinath is the final dham, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is the only one of the four accessible entirely by road. The black stone idol of Badri Vishal, the gold-canopied sanctum, the natural hot spring Tapt Kund, and the nearby Mana Village (last Indian village before the Tibet border) make this a landmark visit that goes beyond the darshan itself.

When do the temples open in 2026?

Temple opening dates are announced on Basant Panchami based on the Hindu calendar. In 2026, the expected opening window is late April to early May. Closing happens around Diwali (October–November). Exact dates are announced officially and we update them here as soon as they are confirmed.

How to plan your Char Dham Yatra

The most important decision is the mode of travel — road or helicopter. Road packages (10–12 days) are the traditional, immersive way. You see the mountains, the river gorges, the small towns along the route. Helicopter packages (4–5 days) are for those with time constraints or physical limitations that make the road version impractical.

For both options, we offer departures from Haridwar (road) and Dehradun (helicopter). Haridwar is the more common starting point — it is well-connected by train and road from all major cities, and the drive from Haridwar through the Garhwal villages forms an integral part of the experience.

Registration is mandatory

All pilgrims must register before starting the Char Dham Yatra. The Uttarakhand government runs an online registration system at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in. Registration helps authorities manage pilgrim flow and provide emergency services. All our packages include registration support.

Who should do the Char Dham Yatra?

There is no age limit and no prerequisite faith test for this pilgrimage. Thousands of elderly pilgrims complete it every year — with ponies and palanquins for the trekking sections, and helicopter services as an alternative. Young families do it. Solo pilgrims do it. The range of physical ability that successfully completes this circuit every year is wider than most people assume.

If you have a specific health condition — heart disease, severe hypertension, breathing disorders — consult your doctor before the high-altitude sections. The temples at Kedarnath and Yamunotri require physical activity at altitude that can be taxing.

Char Dham Yatra 2026 — what is different this year

The Uttarakhand government has been improving the road infrastructure since 2020 under the Char Dham All Weather Road project. Several previously difficult sections are now wider and safer. Helicopter services have increased capacity. Digital darshan booking systems at Kedarnath have reduced queue times. The overall experience in 2026 is meaningfully better than it was five years ago.
